How To Clean A Hairbrush Easily

We use our hairbrushes every day, yet unlike our make-up brushes, many of us never think to clean them. While it's easy to see the build-up of hair in the bristles, don't forget oil, dust, dead skin cells and hair products can also accumulate and should be removed at least once a month.

BRUSH CARE

Remove the build-up of hair once a week, using the teeth of a comb to dislodge the hair by raking them through the bristles and scooping the hair out. Some people leave the hair out for the birds but if you do, make sure you cut it up small.

Brushes with wooden handles should also be handled with care, make sure you don't scratch the wood when combing out the hair. Check care instructions.

SHAMPOO YOUR BRUSH

Swish the head of the brush around in a basin of filled with warm water and a couple of drops of shampoo. Or if the hairbrush is particularly grimy, put a drop on the bristles. Use a toothbrush to scrub the bristles and the base of the hairbrush. Rinse the brush by swishing in a basin of clean water.

Unless your hairbrush is plastic, don't soak it or leave it submerged in water, just swish it around vigorously. Water can get trapped inside the spongy base of paddle brushes and be difficult to remove and could leave an unpleasant smell.

Dry excess moisture from the bristles on a towel then leave in the airing cupboard or somewhere warm to dry overnight.
