Cleaning Oven Door Glass
Our self-cleaning oven has a nice interior light, but the only problem is that you can't keep the glass clean enough to see. The self cleaning cycle doesn't seem to clear it, and soapy water, the only thing the manufacturer suggests is safe on the glass, like Pat Nixon, does Dick.
Apparently regular basic pH oven cleaner is a no-no, and mechanical means like scrapers would probably also cloud the glass.
Any oven pros out there?

I'd be interested in a useful answer to this question, too. Long ago, I gave up on getting it clean, and just live with the unavoidable retinitis pigmentoastus.

Self-cleaning ovens are not famous for cleaning the glass on oven doors, nor the area surrounding them. Therefore, one needs to clean the glass after an especially messy cooking application, such as roasted tomatoes from your garden. Do not try to clean when the glass is hot (experience speaking) but wait until it is cool. Then take a clean sponge with a non-scratch backing, a little soapy hot water and remove the little brown/black dots on the glass. It only takes a few minutes. It saves the pain of doing it much later when it is all burned onto the glass. This applies to the oven door, as well.
There are some things that still have to be done by our own hands, like it or not.
My ovens are Dacor and about 12 years old. If the newer models have some magic, I don't know of it.

I have a Miele oven with a very large glass door. I use Bar Keepers Friend to rid those black dots, streaks and baked on stuff. Still requires a lot of elbow grease . I read the label - safe on glass, ceramic etc. I also use it on my induction cook top.
You should probably check with the manufacturer first before using. It seems abrasive but has not scratched my glass
Mamma Mia !

Bill,
I use an all-purpose kitchen surface cleaner to the glass after it's cooled. Usually, the deposits on our oven glass are carbonized fats (that very sticky brownish stuff that also ends up on frying pans) and various products like Windex or Fantastik (or, in our case, Method All-Purpose Cleaner Pink Pampelmousse) do a very creditable job of removing the stuff.

Never tried it myself, but sounds easy enough if you have patience:

Baking soda & water solution just sprayed on repeatedly over time, and wait.

My housekeeper uses baking soda for a myriad of cleaning applications. Also water and distilled white vinegar.

Also, consider using a razor blade rather than a scrubber once you've softened the stuff.

I was thinking maybe steel wool? Like an SOS pad?

After the self cleaning cycle is over - and the oven is cool - I spray 409 on the inside glass. Then I just scrape it with a razor blade - then wipe. Been doing it for eight years and no clouding or scratches yet.
