Microsoft Wants to Use AI to Address Natural Disasters, Famine

Microsoft on Tuesday launched a $40 million, five-year program to help nongovernmental and humanitarian organizations use its artificial intelligence technology to address natural disasters, famine, and other crises.

"We believe that engineering science, like bogus intelligence … combined with cloud technology, can be a game changer, helping save more lives, alleviate suffering, and restore human dignity past changing the way frontline relief organizations anticipate, predict, and ameliorate target response efforts," Microsoft President Brad Smith wrote in a weblog post.

Every bit office of its AI for Humanitarian Action program, Microsoft will invest in initiatives aimed at: "helping the world recover from disasters, addressing the needs of children, protecting refugees and displaced people, and promoting respect for human rights."

The company is working with the Norwegian Refugee Council, NetHope, and University College Dublin to develop an AI-powered chatbot that can assist displaced youth.

"Using chatbots like this could also provide a model for aid workers in the field," Smith wrote. "Information technology could help these workers communicate with displaced people who speak different languages and who demand specific core services like access to food, health care, and shelter."

Finally, Microsoft says AI can help organizations better "predict, analyze, and answer to" human rights abuses. Going frontward, the company plans to piece of work with nongovernmental and humanitarian organizations on solutions to help detect, monitor, and prevent such violations.

The AI for Humanitarian Action initiative is part of a larger, $115 million Microsoft program called AI for Adept, which aims to utilise the technology to "unlock solutions to some of order'southward biggest challenges."
