What to Expect at E3 2022

It'southward June, and that means it's time for E3. The Electronic Entertainment Expo is coming dorsum to Los Angeles, and I'll be there (with plenty of back up from our reporters back in New York) covering the big news. The announcements starting time this weekend, but betwixt leaks and speculation, there's already plenty to discuss.

No New Consoles

While Sony recently said the PlayStation four is nearing the terminate of its life wheel, don't await to see a PlayStation 5 at E3. Game panel life cycles are long, and the PS4 isn't dying out any time soon; developers are still busy wringing every ounce of power out of the hardware, producing fantastic-looking games like God of War. Don't expect even a hint of the PS5 until at least E3 2022.

Microsoft is in an even more tenuous boat. The Xbox One Ten is even so fresh, and was pushed as a more significant upgrade to the Xbox 1 than the PS4 Pro was to the PS4. Considering the arrangement's position, and Microsoft'due south connected push for Windows ten cantankerous-compatibility and PC gaming on its ain store, at that place won't exist an Xbox Two, Xbox 720, Xbox One Plus, or whatever it calls the next one.

Flagship games, meanwhile, tend to exist a wild carte. The PS4 and Xbox One have very stiff third-political party offerings, and the major publishers tend to accept huge announcements that bleed into the press conferences for Microsoft and Sony. The Terminal of Us 2 is certain at Sony's berth, and Microsoft might announce a new Halo or Gears of War.

Nintendo Switch: Year Two

The Nintendo Switch is a yr old, so we're not getting new Nintendo hardware, but the device had an amazing first year, with several amazing new games and ports of fantastic Wii U games.

Super Mario Odyssey stands as one of the best Mario games yet, and Breath of the Wild was a format-changing revelation on the classic serial.

The Switch version of Super Blast Bros. volition be the biggest Nintendo hands-on opportunity at the show. The 4th Smash game was released on the Wii U and 3DS, and it nevertheless isn't quite clear if this will be an enhanced port on the Switch, or if it'southward Boom 5.

Super Smash Bros.

We know Metroid Prime number 4 is in the works, only it probably won't be at the show. Nintendo is very chary with its large names, commonly waiting to stream a defended Nintendo Direct over the internet instead of fighting with other announcements at E3. Look to see a few announcements, though, even if they're just more Wii U ports. The Wii U had some not bad games, and porting them to the Switch put Mario Kart viii and Bayonetta 2 in the hands of many more gamers.

Ubisoft and Foursquare-Enix: Assassin'due south Creed and More

Assassin's Creed: Odyssey has been confirmed, taking the improved mechanics of Assassinator's Creed: Origins and adding even more RPG elements. Retailer leaks also take fans holding out for a new Splinter Jail cell, another previous tentpole franchise for Ubisoft. On elevation of that, The Division 2 will be shown off, and hopefully we'll encounter more than about Across Good and Evil 2.

Assassins Creed: Odyssey

Square-Enix won't be showing the Last Fantasy vii remake at E3. Let's become that out of the fashion. It volition, nonetheless, show off a new flavour of content for Last Fantasy 15, and possibly a new expansion for the MMO Terminal Fantasy 14.

The really big games it'll be showing off, though, will be Kingdom Hearts iii and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Kingdom Hearts three has been in evolution for ages, and will hopefully wrap upwardly the serial' convoluted story. Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be its own end to the Tomb Raider/Ascension of the Tomb Raider thematic trilogy, but like God of War before information technology, ending one cycle volition probably just commencement another, fifty-fifty more interesting ane.

EA and Activision: Big Shooters and No Surprises

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

EA's Battlefield V and Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 take already been appear. Both are their respective publishers' major non-sports franchises, and they'll exist pushed hard at E3. They're primarily multiplayer, both are well-established, and neither look like they're going to throw upward big mechanical formula changes.

On the more than sci-fi end, Activision will probably prove off a major expansion or update to Destiny 2, and EA will likely give us a closer look at its Bioware-adult shooter Anthem. Anthem looks visually stunning, simply little has been announced well-nigh how information technology volition play. Hopefully it volition come together more at E3.

Sports will exist the usual fare—new FIFA, new Madden, etc. EA might throw a one-half-twist and announce a deep story mode for one of its major sports games (possibly tied to a big thespian or managing director), but even that'south been done before.

Capcom'southward Convention

Mega Man 11

Monster Hunter World proved to be a huge success, to the bespeak that Capcom appear a North American release of the Switch version of Monster Hunter XX (the updated version of Monster Hunter Generations for the 3DS). The Monster Hunter XX port is a technical footstep back from Monster Hunter World, but every bit a portable game information technology's very highly-seasoned.

Mega Man xi is on the way, retailer leaks betoken that Devil May Weep v is coming, and the remake of Resident Evil 2 is confirmed, so at that place are a lot of big Capcom names that could evidence upwardly at E3. Capcom is still holding DMC5 close to its vest, but that just screams major E3 announcement. The big wild menu is the RE2 remake, or even a new Resident Evil game.

Bethesda: Fallout 76 and Elder Scrolls 5.9999

Fallout 76

The cat's out of the bag for a new Fallout game from Bethesda. Fallout 76 has been announced, with fiddling information and lots of caveats that information technology won't be the aforementioned huge open-world structure of the other main Fallout games. This implies spinoff, either with a more guided and activity-focused unmarried-actor campaign or an online-only survival game.

Skyrim is several years quondam and has gone through countless ports and remakes, only it'southward a coin flip whether nosotros'll meet The Elder Scrolls 6 at E3. Bethesda recently rolled out a new expansion to The Elder Scrolls Online, so it might focus on promoting its MMO. It would be great to see a new massive single-player RPG that takes place in Tamriel, though. If nosotros see it, it will just be a tease for a 2022 release.

Doom 2 is a proficient possibility. Doom was a surprise striking, and there'southward definitely room for more insane violence in Bethesda'south library.
